Provenance: the artist's studio; with the Hampstead Gallery
Charlton was a respected teacher at the Royal College of Art. He was a close friend and associate of Stanley Spencer whose style he emulated. The present view shows a cottage in the Gloucestershire village where he and his wife made their home. Stanley Spencer painted a closely comparable view of cottages in Leonard Stanley at the same date - possibly suggesting that the two painters were working together.
