  • Portrait of a young boy -
    Price on request

    With the artist’s studio stamp

Black chalk, 12 by 10 ins (31 by 26 cm)

Provenance: Stanhope Shelton; with Faerber & Mason Ltd, 1970

The present drawing relates to the work “Boy with clasped hands “, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (see Fraser-Jenkins/Stephens, Gwen John and Augustus John, Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue, 2005, no.93). It probably depicts a young boy from Brittany and is one of a number of moving and spontaneous sketches that John made of local children there in the late 1910s.
