Provenance: a gift from the artist to the painter Kenneth Rowntree

The present drawing shows Frost’s move in the 1960s to more simple curvilinear forms, suggesting the influence of American painters such as Ellsworth Kelly.  A comparison to this composition can be seen in June, Red and Black (also from 1965) and now in the Tate Gallery (inv.T00829). Frost gave this drawing to his exact contemporary, Kenneth Rowntree, whose work in Newcastle at the same date was also taking a new direction in its approach to abstraction.
