    This view is from taken from a bedroom window of Clark's home, Mountfield in the village of Hurstpierpoint. Clark moved to this house in 1948 and lived there until his death in 1992. It was here that he painted many of his most original and inventive still lives and landscapes.

    The present work is one of Clark's finest and earliest views taken through windows at his house, Mountfield in the Sussex Village of Hurstpierpoint. he had moved to the village in the previous year and lived there until his death in 1992.

    This beautiful early study probably dates from the early to mid 1930s and conveys something of the unconventional eye for detail and original sense of composition that went on to characterise so much of Norman Clark’s work.

    Clark's early work in oil is very rare. He almost completely stopped painting in the medium after World War Two, but the work that remains shows how he excelled equally in this medium as he did in watercolour.

    The present work dates from the mid 1940s when Clark, serving in the army, was posted to Italy. He painted a number of fine watercolours as well as numerous fascinating sketches in idle moments he had whilst on active service.

    The present watercolour shows Clark's daughter, Penny, taking her young family on a walk near Hurstpierpoint. It is a fine example of Clark's quirky figurative landscapes.
