Bateman’s wonderful country scenes capture the disappearing world of agricultural England better than any other artist of his era. His best known works in this vein include Commotion in the Cattle ring and Cattle market (both in the Tate Gallery). Farming was in his blood, arriving from rural Westmorland on a scholarship to the Royal College of Art and rising to become a member of the Royal Academy.
