Much of the great genius in Spencer’s work rests in his depictions of everyday events in his own strikingly original way. This is evident in his many paintings of domestic scenes, which show the routine events in his life, in particular those with his first wife Hilda Carline. Like those works the present drawing is likely to show an event in Spencer’s memory of no intrinsic significance, but transformed by his originality and flair into something far more remarkable.
