This early work probably depicts part of the Peak District in Derbyshire not far from the artist's home in Sheffield. Barnes trained at the Slade School of Art under Randolph Schwabe whose daughter he went on to marry. He was a distinguished art teacher and succeeded Douglas Percy Bliss at principal of Glasgow School of Art in the mid 1960s.
