Ludovici was one of Whistler’s closest friends on the London art scene and his own delicately impressionistic views of the city are strongly in the American artist’s spirit and style. Mainly living in Paris, such views, like the present work, lend a sophisticated French style to the streets of London. Widely exhibited in this country, Ludovici showed some 147 works at the Suffolk Street Gallery as well as at the Royal Academy from 1880 to 1897 and the Grosvenor Galleries. He was also a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in close support of his friend Whistler.
