Joseph Edward Southall, RWS

1866-1944

Self Portrait, 1918

Ref: 2584

Dated and signed within the plate l.r.: JES/1918

Lithograph, 23 by 19 cm (9 by 7 ½ ins)

Provenance: the artist’s cousin Isabel Harlock and thence by descent

Although this self-portrait pre-dates his 1925 tempera self-portrait (collection of Birmingham City University) it shows the artist in very much the same pose.  Southall made a number of self-portraits including Man with a Sable Brush (1896, private collection), Self-Portrait Wearing a Fez (1933, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists) and perhaps most famously The Agate, his large full length joint portrait showing him standing with his wife on Southwold beach (1911, National Portrait Gallery, London.)
