A Herefordshire Cottage

Ref: 675

Sepia wash, 7 by 9 1/4 ins (17.5 by 23.5 cm)

Cox moved to Hereford in 1814, staying there until 1827. He was sustained there by his teaching positions at the Ladies’ School and the Grammar School in the city. The present drawing is typical of the very early watercolours he executed there of cottages in and around the city. Comparable work can be seen in an important published work from 1814, A Treatise on Landscape Painting and Effect in Water Colours.
