Spencer moved to the Lake District in the early 1940s when the the Royal College of Art was evacuated to Ambleside during World War Two. Spencer was a tutor at the college during this time. The present watercolour depicts a farm to the edge of St Bees (also the site of a well-known school) near the Cumberland coast.
